cycling soles

Most cyclists would rather spend their money on a nice set of wheels than on something as boring and invisible as cycling soles. Wrongly, because custom cycling soles are not only there to prevent physical discomfort and improve comfort, they can even improve your cycling performance!

Pain complaints

  • Sore and burning feet

  • Deaf, tingling toes and forequarters

  • Pressure spots under the feet, e.g. corns

  • Pain under the arch of the foot

  • Overload of the sesame bones under the ball of the big toe

  • Achilles tendon complaints

  • Overload complaints of the knee

Performance enhancing

Despite the fact that cycling shoes have a hard carbon sole, the foot can still sink into the shoe during cycling (pronation). We prefer not to see this movement, ideally this force is placed on the pedals. A cycling sole prevents this sagging and ensures optimal transmission to the pedal.

Comfort increasing

During cycling, the force is transferred to the pedal via the forefoot. There is a small support surface of the foot and the pressure per cm2 will be increased.  The result is often painful feet and/or numb tingling toes. The cycling sole has 'full contact'  with your foot and ensures optimal pressure distribution.

Fitting

  • To measure an optimal sole, the sports podiatrist will conduct an extensive intake to determine the cause of your pain and clarify your goals. During the extensive cycling research, the following parts will be discussed:

  • Biomechanical research, we look at whether there are mobility limitations that can lead to compensations while cycling, and thus to injuries. Consider, for example, a stuck ankle.

  • Stability and pressure measurement analysis with pressure measurement system. This gives us an idea of where the foot is looking for stability while cycling and whether there are pressure points present.

  • A 3D scan of the feet. In order to be able to make an optimally fitting sole, a 3D scan of the feet is made.

  • Shoe/footplate analysis. The shoe and/or incorrectly adjusted foot plates are a major cause of many foot complaints while cycling.

  • Dynamic bike analysis. We can best assess how you move while cycling on the bike. Important points of attention are the movement of your foot, knee and leg. Because, for example, an incorrectly adjusted saddle can also lead to the foot and knee sinking inwards, we also screen your cycling position.

  • At the end, we feed back all our findings to you, with our advice. For example, if your pelvis is tilted or if your bike is not properly adjusted, it may be advisable to visit a manual therapist or bike fitter.

  • Developing the cycling soles

  • The cycling soles are developed in CAD, the 3D scan of your foot forms the basis for this. Your sports podiatrist will add the desired corrections to make the sole optimal for you. With this CAD data we can mill and/or shape your sole. Production is done entirely in-house.

What do cycling soles look like?

The Profysic cycling soles have a carbon/fiber core. This has the advantage that the foot is kept stable while cycling and that the pressure is optimally distributed. In addition, this carbon core allows some torsion, which promotes cycling comfort. The thickness is, of course, adjusted to the space in your own cycling shoe. Another important feature of the cycling soles is that they are 'coiled'. That is, the underside is not flat, but round at the heel and hollow under the midfoot. Most cycling shoes do not have a flat bottom. The molded sole makes it fit nicely in the cycling shoe.

At Profysic we have two options for making cycling soles:

  • The carbon core molds directly to the 3D last of your foot.

  • Hybrid sole, where a carbon core is combined with a custom-milled 3D top layer.

In consultation with you, we look at which sole is best suited for you. This depends on your application of the soles (eg MTB or on the road) and the space in the shoe.
