Team TTW has a number of specialists who support the team in the 'Premier league Triathlon'. One of them is Ingrid Janssen. She guides (top) athletes in sports podiatry; she prevents injuries and treats injuries that are caused by a different foot position during running and cycling. Never thought that paying attention to "footwork" would make such a difference.
After a quick scan of my foot handling on location, I decided to visit Profysic in Eindhoven for further investigation. I suffered from an injury on the inside of the calf - and Ingrid's first analysis indicated a sagging left instep.
In Eindhoven, Profysic analyzed the position of the legs, calves, gait analyzing with video recordings and optical perception, both when walking and cycling. The video about walking on the treadmill soon provided clarity; indeed a good sagging instep with me. Ingrid indicated that sagging ensures that the tendon under the foot (which continues to the calf) is always under too much tension, so that the inside of the calf becomes painful at the point where it is attached to the bone.
To remedy this, a sole is needed that supports the instep - so that it does not sag. For this Ingrid made prints of my feet in a kind of hard foam - which is transferred to a 3D digital file. This is also directly the mold for the sole which is then built up in 3D.
A week and a half after the analysis and foot measurement, I was able to pick up the insoles - after first testing them again on the bicycle and on the treadmill. "I want to see if it has an effect," says Ingrid. "And the athlete must also feel that it fits well - and otherwise we will adjust it on the spot." I got both insoles that support well for my running shoes - and offer pleasant cushioning. I also got insoles for my cycling shoes, built from carbon that offer custom support.
The first training sessions with the insoles are finished. In the beginning it feels a bit strange - because off the support in the insole. Before the compensation of the insole, the arch "dropped" more - which I thought was a kind of cushioning. The calf is now calmer - and the pain is gone - so for me it is a "golden" move. I didn't think that this could make such a difference.
